Where

Since it matters where you take the picture we decided to try more or less the same photo in entirely different locations. Hare-brained as it may seem, we are bracketing locations while attempting to keep the same basic pose.

Of course, since all of these are shot with available light, the lighting is changing completely along with the location, so we are changing two variables at once. Not very scientific.

Bottom Line: A different location will give you a different photograph.

Nicole's tiny bathroom offered a mirror, red walls, and a strong overhead tungsten light. The blue behind her reflection is the view of another room that is lit by daylight, hence much bluer than the bathroom.

105mm, 24-105 zoom, f4, 1/30, ISO1600

We moved to the dining room where the window light contrasted with the warm light inside the cabinet.

Outside the house, against an iron gate. An overcast day.

105mm, 24-105 zoom, f6.7, 1/250, ISO 800

We found a park with some flowers, with the day still overcast.

We stood along the Charles River in Cambridge with Boston in the background.

105mm, 24-105 zoom, f6.7, 1/350, ISO800

We found a narrow street in downtown Boston, where the soft overcast became more directional since it came down between the buildings.

105mm, 24-105 zoom, f6.7, 1/350, ISO 800

We stuck out faces outside a store window to place Nicole in front of a retail display. Still, the overcast provides a soft directional light, whereas the store window is a warm yellow.

Nicole sits on the ground outside the harbor seal tank at the New England Aquarium. We waited about half an hour for a seal to appear in the right place.
